Larimar is found in only place in the world, one square kilometer in the Dominican Republic. In 1974, at the foot of the Bahoruco Range, the coastal province of Barahona, Miguel Méndez and Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling rediscover Larimar on a beach. Natives, who believed the stone came from the sea, called the gem Blue Stone. Miguel took his young daughter’s name Larissa and the Spanish word for sea (mar) and formed Larimar, by the colors of the water of the Caribbean Sea, where it was found.
Larimar is a beautiful blue and can range from light blue, almost white to a deep blue with or without great white striations. Larimar is also found in shades of green and can be seen with some red or copper flecking . Each piece is totally unique.
Larimar is Pectolite, a hydrothermal mineral and ranges from 5 to 7 on the hardness scale. Diamonds are the hardest at 10. The darker the piece is, the harder it is. The patterns in the stone (spider web, clouds, etc.) are determined by how much water was in the stone while it was forming. The white is where the water was. Copper is partially responsible for the color of the stone.
Larimar, often called the dolphin stone is associated with the lost continent of Atlantis. It is said to increase the wearer’s skills of speech and communication and to have the ability to draw ones soul mate. The energy of Larimar relieves headaches and eases stress and tension. This unique stone unites the elements of water and air, and represents peace and clarity, with healing and loving energy.
